This complete Season 2 box set contains 22 20-minute episodes on 3 discs. Each episode typically consists of about 20 one minute scenes within a defined three-act structure. This comedy serial stars Charlie Sheen as an unconventional anger management therapist living in the Valley district of LA. He leads one support group at his own house and another in a men's prison. His home support group consists of 3 diverse people in their 20s and a retired Texas man, who expresses views and opinions associated with mid-century Texas. This season, Charlie encourages the members of the group to help each other out in challenging or emergency situations, acting as anger buddies. This opens the action out to bars, clothing boutiques, etc. As in Season 1, the characters of the prison group are only briefly sketched, and those scenes are played for easy one-liners, often picking up a theme from earlier in the episode. Meeting Charlie's own mental and physical needs is Kate Wales (not the future queen), a more highly-qualified psychiatrist, played by Sheen's main co-star, Selma Blair. She consents to act as both therapist and lover, provided there is minimal emotional involvement. This theme is carried to its ultimate academic conclusion late in Season 2 when she and Charlie conduct joint research comparing the `Friends with Benefits' model with `Traditional Monogamy'. This bizarre scenario is a rich source of longer form humour, stretching across an entire episode. Additional characters are provided by Charlie's complex home life. He has shared custody of a 15-year-old daughter with OCD. His less well educated wife frequently visits seeking extra cash, and guilting Charlie about his numerous affairs as a former professional athlete. Neigbour, Michael Boatman, often drifts in briefly for food and a chat. In Season 2, Charlie's father (Martin Sheen) moves to LA from Ohio, expecting Charlie to support him. This part allows Sheen to be somewhat more grown-up than in some previous roles. His comic timing, dramatic delivery, and resonant voice remain intact, and he remains highly watchable. Sheen has had better comic writers to work with. However, the material is still fairly good. Selma Blair is also strong, and matches up with Sheen well. There are still too many characters in Season 2, and one feels that, had the serial continued, these would have been thinned out to achieve the best comic results. Overall rating 6.5/10. Read full review
