The Ambassador's Mission is the first book of the Traitor Spy Trilogy and is the follow on to the Black Magician Trilogy. Most certainly you should read the first before starting on this book. The author has created a land where magicians belong to the guild and the first trilogy is focused on a teenage girl, Sonea, who accidentally discovers she also has magic. I found the first trilogy thrilling and read all three books one after the other. You get drawn into a world where magic is commonplace. Each character is developed in depth. The whole plot unfolds in an epic way until all the threads are drawn together in a colossal ending. The story ends but you are left wanting more. And so enter The Ambassador’s Mission. This story starts twenty years in the future from the end of the first trilogy. The guild has been changed by the events at the conclusion of the first trilogy. Sonea has a son, Lorkin and it is now his adventure that we follow as he and Dannyl ( a Guild Ambassador from the first trilogy) set off to unknown and potentially dangerous lands. In the meanwhile Cery, Sonea’s best friend from the slums has established himself in the underworld that exists outside the guild. Murders in this underworld touch Cery and so unfolds a new plot to catch the mysterious murderer. At the end of this book we are left hanging with the various plots having made dramatic turns and so we must turn to the second book in the trilogy. Trudy Canavan has done it again. I have been drawn into this trilogy in exactly the way I was with the first. I can wholeheartedly recommend this book to any one that has read the first trilogy.Read full review
I read the first Trudi Canavan Magician trilogy quite a while ago, and thoroughly enjoyed all three. This book (and the two that follow it) takes the story forward into new territory, introducing new characters alongside some of the old ones. I was hooked, and had to buy the second book (The Rogue) and third (The Traitor Queen) and once again thoroughly enjoyed all three. The settings are exotic but somehow totally believable. I would love to see it converted to a screenplay to watch on Netflix or Prime! A highly recommended read.
