Bought this for ruggedness of dell as second laptop for wife. This one had a good processor + spec, Ram + battery for a good price.
The electric power supply was not good and oblige me to buy an other one. At least I spend more than I supposed to do
I NEEDED A NEW LAPTOP SO WENT FOR A NOTE BOOK AND THIS ONE FITTED ALL THE BOXES.I LIKE THIS ONE AS IT IS SMALL AND COMPACT AND HAS A DVD PLAY BACK AND RECORD ON IT.AND WAS GOOD VALUE FOR THE PRICE.
Dell D630 laptop. The Vista ones are slightly newer than the XP ones. They can run Win 7 but I put XP on the 'Vista' edition. I have not seen one faster than 2.6 Dual core, but I have a 2.3 Dual core and I see 1.8 dual core ones for sale. Watch out for 1.8 dual being described as 3.6 (and 1.8-dual being mentioned lower down in the description), which is misleading. I cannot say how fast they are on Win 7, as I use XP on them. Very fast and never crashes. I used Macrium Reflect to transer XP from another machine. You need to let Microsoft validate 'new hardware' online but this is no problem. On the Dell site you can enter the unique tag no for the machine (or let it detect it)and get drivers from Dell. In the end I found the Dell site very laborious to use, and the best way I found after putting XP on with the Macrium Reflect was to use the WinXP drivers disk from soft-refurbs on ebay. "Dell Latitude D630 Drivers Recovery Restore Disc DVD For Windows XP VISTA 7". It finds all of them except one. This I got from the Dell site. Sometimes one driver is hard to install, but it worked in the end. On the Dell help pages a few others had asked about this but Dell had not responded. I used system/ hardware/ remove device/ look for new hardware/ use Windows search. Watch out for 'broken' ones where the system password prevents access, or prevents changes to BIOS. Apparently Dell do not release the master password for your machine (if set - not needed if not set) unless you can give the details of the previous owner. This is only a problem if previous owner set a password. You could look up the follwing which I have not tried but from the comments others make, seems to work on D630s. "Dogbert's Blog: BIOS Password Backdoors in Laptops" I use with a docking station so it can have a closed lid and a large monitor. (And PS2 keyboard). The larger docking station can take a PCI card. The larger docking station has its own power supply. With the smaller one you need the adaptor. Can fit 2nd drive with caddy in CD drive bay.Read full review
