Merlin is a light hearted fantasy film with terrific perfomances from Martin Short, Sam Neill and Miranda Richardson who brillantly pulls of playing both the lady of the lake and Mab, Queen of Darkness. Along with Helena Bonham Carter, Sir John Gielgud, Rutger Hauer and Isabella Rossilini who plays Merlin's (Sam Neill) one and only love Nimue you can't help but love this film. If you are looking for love, action, and the fight between good versus evil then this is the film for you. Although the love interest is there unlike some films it is not in your face. Definatly one the kids (big and small) will like. The film explains how Merlin came into being, born from a human mother and the evil sorceress Mab. Merlin is Mab's way of keeping the old ways of magic alive but Merlin soon realises that Mab is not all she seems and the fight is on! Great for a Sunday afternoon or a Friday night film with the kids and plenty of popcorn. There are cast/crew bibliographies as well as the Legend of Merlin and the making of the film to watch which are interesting the film is the main attraction.Read full review
I bought this as I'd borrowed the video version from a friend but then my children lost it, so I had to replace it and my friend had already said she was looking for it on DVD. Once it had arrived I watched it with my children and we all thought it was really good, special fx were great. Well worth keeping.
This movie kept me visually stunned from the start to the finish. Arthurian legends have always been interesting...but seeing it from the view of Merlin, the character who has been a mystery in many other forms of the tales, his story now gets to be told. The story of him fighting all his life against the evil of Queen Mab is very entertaining, and adds something new to the character.
