Part of a wonderful series of books by Diana Gabaldon, and although each can be read as a stand-alone story, reading them as the series gives you a far better understanding of the story overall Jamie and Claire Fraser, exiled from Scotland, now own land in the North Carolina colony of the 1770s, where they start a small gathering of similar exiled Scots, building cabins and homesteads, working the land, following their traditions. Jamie builds a Fiery Cross, where he gathers his people, and through Claire's knowledge of what will happen in the future, he tells his people where he will stand in the forthcoming war which will tear America apart Claire and Jamie have a love so strong it has endured much, they first met before Culloden, when she slipped through a cleft stone, finding herself 202 years in the past, met Jamie and eventually they fell in love. On the eve of Culloden, Jamie sends her back to her own time, but as her life changes again, she returned to the past, to Jamie, and their story continues An excellent book, with believable events and historical fact expertly mingled with fiction.Read full review
