The author's device of viewing much of the events through the eyes of the squadron's intelligence officer works very well. The two main characters are a bit stereotyped but are allowed to develop. I'd rate it as better than Nevil Shute's "Pastoral" but not as good as Len Deighton's "Bomber". It could have been made into a successful film if it hadn't been published during the period when real aircraft were no longer available and CGI was still a pipe dream.
