(Review written by Choronzon 'Wulf' Lavinia SLut 333 Fenris Blackangel) Lesbian lovers Fran and Miriam are brutally shot dead in their bed...they return from their graves...as VAMPYRES!!!I wo'nt go into any more of the plot(plot?what plot???),suffice it to say that this is a text book example of the "euro-erotica-vampire-style-over-content-not-much-happens-beautifully-for-an hour-and-a-half" type of movie that was popular for a while in the 1970's.Fang-fetishists may be disappointed, because, despite the box artwork(or for that matter the original poster),there are'nt any, dental prosthetics being eschewed(for budgetary reasons?)in favour of a large and scarey looking dagger and some broken glass. But do'nt worry, the stars, lovely Marianne Morris and the jaw-droppinly beautiful Anulka Dziubinska are quite decorative enough without them, and this approach makes for some fairly brutal(for 1974)slayings.But do'nt be mistaken:-this film is not about sex(although there's plenty!),or violence(although that's not exactly on short supply either!!!),it's about ATMOSPHERE!'VAMPYRES'is a beautiful, subtle, erotic lesbian romance, shot in the style of a classic ghost story. Jose Ramon Larraz's direction absolutely drips with style, wringing the best out of his performers(includng, surprisingly,Murray Brown from the BBC's comedey 'Are You Being Served?'),while Henry Waxman B.S.C.'s cinematography makes the best of some beautiful English countryside locations.James Clarke's tense and edgy musical score puts the final icing on the metaphorical cake. The BBFC really did'nt like this one when it first came out,so they went a bit scissor-happy on it's initial release.Fans will be pleased to know that our good friends at Anchor Bay have(as usual)(THANKS GUYS 'N'GALS...KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!!)re-mastered this from the original negative, restoring all the bits thet the censors thought it was OK for them to watch, but not the rest of us!!!!If you're offended by mild/moderate nudity/sex or lashings of fake blood you might want to avoid this one,but for fans of the genre it's a MUST!If you've seen and enjoyed Harry Kumel's''Les Levres Rouges'('Daughters Of Darkness'),or any of Jean Rollin''s classics such as'La Morte Vivante'('The Living Dead Girl'),or'Deux Orphaniles Vampires'('The Two Orphan Vampires'),you're bound to like this one!The DVD includes several excellent stills galleries, including some rare original publicity material, and a short but interesting featurette ,consisting of interviews with our lovely stars,Marianne and Anulka. If you've seen this movie before and you want a copy this is definately the one to go for.If you have'nt seen it,but you're into this type of thing,BUY IT ANYWAY!You wo'nt be disapointed. If you're not into this type of movie.....WHY ARE YOU BOTHERING TO READ THIS REVIEW???????Absolutely wonderful,333 out of 10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!P.S.This is a genuine review,I have not been sponsored by Anchor Bay or any related company,I just LOVE this movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Read full review
