I bought this to replace an Athlon 3200+, because video and graphics had begun moving sluggishly in Windows XP. I had considered a more powerful CPU, such as the 4800+ or FX-59, but I found this much more affordable. The main things I wanted were a dual-core processor whose cores were each faster than my previous CPU, and the 4400+ fit the bill at an affordable price. After installing it, the System Control Panel reported my CPU was a 4400+, the Task Manager showed two graphs for the CPU, and the Asus Cool & Quiet utility reported a max of 2200 Ghz. I played Warblade, a retro-game based on Deluxe Galaga, and the graphics and music went smoothly for most of the game, the graphics slowing down for only an instant late in the game. Videos I watched now played smoothly. The subtitles in Korean dramas now behaved normally instead of going by too quickly or being skipped. To test the limits of what it could do, I tried to watch a YouTube video while PowerDirector worked on producing a video. This caused the video to move slugglishly. But when I stopped PowerDirector's video production, the video played smoothly. While producing a video, I played Freecell, then tried using OpenOffice Impress, which crashed, and then used Firefox. Firefox moved more slowly than usual, but I got some web browsing done while my most resource-hungry program was doing its most resource-hungry task. It took about 2 3/4 hours to produce an approximately 25 minute video. Although Ubuntu Linux had remained very fast with my 3200+, it got even faster with my 4400+. When I clicked on the Firefox button, Firefox appeared immediately instead of taking a few seconds to load. Windows XP may still be slower with my 4400+ than Linux has been with my 3200+. It still takes longer to start up, shut down, and run programs than Linux did with my slower processor. But it is no longer sluggishly displaying video and graphics. So it looks like the Athlon 4400+ is what my computer needed.Read full review
Worked great! Install was a little hard due to pins not being perfectly straight but can certainly happen on older used chips. The seller included a sheet with a few helpful tips on how to deal with pins that might not be pleasant which is a great idea. Brought new life to an older machine running a single core chip. Mix in a little extra ram and an SSD and it sings almost as good as the new machines which is amazing really. Athlon 4000+ to x2 4400+, 3GB to 4GB, 300gb pata HD to 120 SSD, gt 240 to a R7 360, Win XP to Win7x64(will not work with win10 x64), all on an A8n5x. Mainly used for retro gaming (XP era titles) but has the potential to play some modernish titles at lower frames.

After installing, a stress test was run to check the memory and CPU. The MOBO BIOS advertised this CPU as a lot better than a 4400+ ;-). After 24 hours there were no failures and core temps were below 60 deg C. Under nominal load the core temps were below 40 deg C. This CPU is being used in a full Ubuntu LAMP server with a virtual Microsoft SQL server running in a VM using Virtualbox. Not bad for and old 939 CPU socket. Maybe I was just lucky, but this is a great bargain. BTW, the heat sink paste works, but buy some Arctic Silver. I've used the paste and it turns to glue - literally pulls out the CPU when replacing a heat sink.

I bought 1 of these exact CPUs new for $200 back in 2004 I believe when I was building my very first computer system. I did a lot of legwork before purchasing the chip and out there for all of the socket 939 CPU's, This chip does the overall best in cost/performance in my book, for what it is, it has a lot of L2 cache, (2mb)(most of the other chips for a socket 939 had 128kb to 1mb) and in 2004, that was a LOT!!! today, kind of on the value end, they do make chips today in value systems with 1-2mb of cache. Well, I bought this one used off of ebay because of my prior experience with this specific model of chip and I have an old computer I need to replace the cpu in anyways, and it's board supports this chip, so why not upgrade? Sure don't want to put another single core 512bk l2 cache chip back in it, do I? ...Especially singe I don't have to! For what this chip is, It is Awesome!!! My old home-built system lasted 2 years before it got stolen and I ran it 24/7 Overclocked to 2.4Ghz. I remember when the first power supply blew a capacitor and I had to replace it. Bottom line, This is a Bulletproof, Rock-Solid CPU for it's time. Update, I forgot to mention, I Did a lot of video editing and transcoding with my first chip, So I taxed both cores very often while the chip was being overclocked, and it held up to the abuse flawlessly, It never overheated either. For its age, and on a budget these days, you can still build a decent system with this 9-year-old CPU for gaming, video editing, whatever you want to throw at it really, might run a little slow by today's standards, but it will run today's latest games and softwares without much difficulty. AMD really overdid themselved when they released this chip.Read full review
This was an upgrade from a single core Venice 3400 so significant speed increases were not that apparent. It's a good upgrade option for those still in single core socket 939 territory. It is fast when multitasking but not by a significant margin. Probably due to the fact that I am using the on-board video rather than a dedicated video card. More RAM will certainly help, that's my next upgrade for my system and a solid state drive may be after that. Changing from a 7200rpm drive to a 10000rpm WD Raptor made a huge difference though! Still I would never go back to the single cores...runs great and never gets toasty though I do have a copper heat pipe type of heat sink on it with Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste too. It was an excellent upgrade for the amount of money I spent! It fact it was cheaper than the price I paid for the Venice 3400 brand new!Read full review
