I have been playing guitar for almost 29 years, 20+ of them at the professional level. I have owned many fuzzes over the years. Even though Jimi Hendrix was my initial inspiration to take up the guitar, and even though I had learned about Roger Mayer sometime toward the end of the 90's -- I still never thought to check out a Roger Mayer fuzz. Boy, was that ever a mistake. All this time, the fuzz I had wanted all along eluded me. The Axis Fuzz is the sound that has been in my head all this time. I could kick myself for not going this route sooner. Most notably outstanding about this thing is that you can set it to full-bore fuzz, leave it on for the whole song, and just control everything from the volume knob on your guitar. Just fantastic. Turned up all the way for solos, it makes the amp sound like it's going to explode in the most wonderful way. There are a few drawbacks, though. The size is not pedalboard-friendly. It only runs on 9v batteries, too. It isn't horrible with a wah, but it's not great, either. It gets overloaded by the wah or buy higer output humbuckers. Definitely seems to prefer single coils. That said, I'm going to try a ScreaminFX Clarionix buffer between the wah and the Axis. I think this will fix it. And it will be worth it because I have never played a fuzz that I felt so connected to. I absolutely love it. Totally worth the few hassles.Read full review

I've heard this pedal for 40-years not knowing what its sound was until I began to assemble a Jimi Hendrix "Voodoo" setup. This pedal was the last piece of the JH FX puzzle and I'm glad that I've waited to add this pedal because of its beastie nature. You just have to be aware of where to place the Octavia in the audio chain because of how the input signal affects its output. I placed mine after the wah pedal, so that my audio chain looks like: Uni-Vibe- OD- wah- Octavia- delay- tuner- amp. This works rather nicely for me at this time. Cheers, Z
Awesome for getting Hendrix's Purple Haze or One Rainy Wish Sound with a Strat (neck pickup and tone rolled off). The Rocket Octavia does not have 9V DC plug, only batteries. Keep it in mind if you want to assemble it on a pedalboard. Also is goddamn huge, veri big footprint. But is cool as hell. With humbuckers, the sound is very nasty, but in a good way (Fu Manchu's King of the Road, more or less). Groovy.
Sound is really nice, but somehow potentiometers and switch doesn't feel like a great quality. I probably have to replace them in the near future.

I have owned one other Roger Mayer Octavia which I got in the late eighties. The Mayer Rocket FX was the sound I heard in music from Hendrix to Eric Johnson. Perfect with Tube overdrive or fuzz and echo for that "One Rainy Day Wish" tone. And plus...it looks soooo cool.
