An early critic of this book said, "it's like the Old Testament". And that pretty much sums up my view of it. The stories are not descriptive and there is no characterization at all. Deliberately, Tolkien has written a book of lore and in a style that cements its place as an essential, if difficult read. So many names, different lands and thousand year time scales make it a heavy though ultimately rewarding slog. You could run a marathon and spend less energy.
