To begin with, I'm no Stephanie Mills expert so I can't say whether this really is a 'Best of...' - there might be undiscovered gems on her albums. What I can say is that I've always loved quite a few of her tracks and was suprised how many more on this CD I know and love as well. The ones a know less well are the ballads but, being a ballad-lover, I can confirm that the standard is very high. If you don't know her work then a brief description would be the funkier end of disco. Sure the strings and handclaps are there but there's a deeper, funkier groove going on. This, of course, is pretty much down to the writing and production of James Mtume and Reggie Lucas on most of the hits. Stephanie has an excellent rich, characterful, soulful voice although she's not a 'belter'. Stand-out tracks: the 12" version of 'Put Your Body In It' - this was a favourite of mine 30 years ago and it still carries a huge punch. Lovely dirty mid-tempo bass line and a slow build adding guitar and strings plus a fantastic brass riff - wonderful! Similar mid-tempo groovers are 'You Can't Run From My Love'and 'What Cha Gonna Do With My Loving?' - both excellent. 'The Medicine Song' is slightly tougher with a throbbing synth-bass - not such a favourite but no problem with the quality. 'You Can Get Over' is classic fast disco. On the ballad side, I love Teddy Pendergrass so the duet 'Two Hearts' is right up my street. 'Starlight' is great but the best vocal is on 'You and I' - lots of passion but beautiful control. Final word, great to have the 12" versions of the dance hits - makes all the difference. A very worthwhile purchase.Read full review
