bought this version because of the illustrations by Alan Lee. They help you to visulise the world of TLOR so well and this helps to keep your attention especially during the more tedious bits of the book. Sometimes with Tolkien you feel that he is over verbose and could usefully prune bits to make the thing better. Of course he is a master of his craft. But he is nevertheless not perfect. It is a thick book more than 1000 pages and is heavy. It is the kind of book you look after because there is a feeling that in years to come it could be worth quite a bit for your grandchildren. I would generally recommend the version esp because of the illustrations.
