Liu Jian (Jet Li) is a Chinese government agent who has been sent to France to assist in the arrest of a Chinese heroin smuggler. But when he arrives he is framed for murder by corrupt French police detective Jean-Pierre Richard (Tchéky Karyo) and forced to go on the run in a bid to prove his innocence. When he meets Jessica (Bridget Fonda), a prostitute whose daughter Isabel is being held captive by Richard, Liu offers to get Isabel back if Jessica will help expose Richard's corruption. The writers of THE FIFTH ELEMENT, Luc Besson (who also directed the Bruce Willis film) and Robert Mark Kamen, have teamed up again to deliver Jet Li in the action thriller KISS OF THE DRAGON. Li stars as Liu Jiuan, a Chinese agent so dedicated to his job that he has no friends, no family, no dreams. He is sent to Paris to help the French police capture a Chinese gangster, but France's top cop, Jeanne-Pierre Richard (Tcheky Karyo), has set Liu up to take the fall for a brutal killing he himself carried out. On the run in a strange city, Liu keeps a low profile until he unwillingly becomes friends with an American hooker, Jessica (Bridget Fonda)--who just happens to hold the key to his innocence. But Richard is always one step ahead of them--he has Jessica's daughter. Li and Fonda make a great team; their relationship is at the core of the film, as neither character has ever been able to put his complete trust in another person before. The action scenes, directed by Corey Yuen, are fast and furious and very violent, featuring mesmerizing moves by Li, especially one involving a billiard ball. Chris Nahon, in his directorial debut, makes excellent use of the location, including numerous shots of famous Parisian landmarks as the bad cops try to machine-gun down Liu in the streets and sewers and on the Seine.

Take that!!
This is an action packed almost Bruce lee style thriller, with a centre on corruption at government level. Powerful barons, pimps and drugs set in the seedy underworld of Paris (which makes a change from the backdrop of America), make up a surprisingly complicated but realistic theme, even despite the showcase agent fighting sequences! It sure is a hard and evil world portrayed here by the brutal ruling stronghold of police chief mafia's and the ring cocktail of narcotics, prostitution, vice and sheer dog eat dog murder! Forget all that though. Sit back and enjoy the sheer feel of vengeance as our hero (Liu Jian, who plays a Criminal intelligence officer- a martial arts and acupuncture expert) slowly goes to work on a deadly conspiracy and no win scenario. This is a well cast and appropriately riveting and bloody piece of work that has a real sting in its tail. It's thoroughly enjoyable and without doubt, as good as (but very different to) a Bond movie. The lack of a sense of humour is the only thing you could possibly fault this film on. It's lightning-paced too. The exhilarating fight sequences feature Li using props a la Jackie Chan style. But to compensate for this pace an interesting relationship forms when Bridget Fonda enters the picture. The chemistry that clicks between her and Li is strong, and even sometimes sweet and touching. The action scenes are supremely exciting and very impressive. First of all, there seems to be no wirework, or at least none that I noticed, so there’s a feeling of authenticity in all the fight scenes. The action is very bloody and graphically violent. Some may see this as a flaw in the film by some of its settings. Those who think present-day Paris is nothing but a beautiful and romantic City obviously haven't seen it's underworld, and the grungy and seedy side of society in the city, (looks like the Rue St. Denis to me). Fonda is good, and so is Li, who acts well. The quiet intensity he displays possibly says more than any dialogue that might spew out from say, Steven Seagal or Jean-Claude Van Damme, perhaps, but I would have liked a bit of philosophical content too. Tcheky Karyo is disgustingly vile in his role, (just as any villain always is, of course). The actual Kiss of the Dragon the movie's title refers to be a form of Chinese acupuncture, a method that Li uses in the film that can put people to sleep or give a very bloody death. This film’s all about action and I'm certainly not complaining when it comes to that. A must see!Read full review

"Kiss of the Dragon" doesn't have much of a plot, it's basically all action. It revolves around the top cop in China, Liu Jian (Jet Li), who's been sent to Paris to investigate drug-trafficking involving a high level official, but quickly finds himself a suspect in a murder. He is framed by the lead investigator Inspector Jean Pierre Richard (Tcheky Karyo), who is playing both sides with the French and the Chinese. Liu has proof of his innocence and during the search for "the real killers" he accidentally becomes involved with Jessica (Bridget Fonda), a Mid-western farmgirl brought to Paris by Richard, who keeps her addicted to drugs and on the street as a hooker. You would think that there is some attraction between Jessica the monotone Liu Juan, but the chemistry just isn't there. The script tries to suggest and even leaves the possibility open of something deeper, but it just doesn't happen. Richard truly gives off a sinister air and Bridget Fonda does a very good job in this film. Possibly one of her best yet, too bad her leading man couldn't match her acting ability. But that's OK, because the action is what carries this film. There are some great acrobatic fighting scenes, my favorite being the attack with a billiards ball. Now, I could say this movie plays out like a porno...good action scenes, but you gotta sit through the dialogue and plot to get to it. There are some really stupid things that happen in the film, like the shootings in the streets and other public places, where no one seems to call the police afterward...no questions...no investigation. When Richard's thugs find Liu Jian they say that he's in "a restaurant", but don't specify which one. However, the posse just happens to know where to go. Remember, Paris is a major city; there are restaurants aplenty there. Also, Jet Li is supposed to be a martial arts master and cop, but yet his preferred weapons of choice are these little acupuncture needles. I love martial arts action movies, but "Kiss of the Dragon" is just one step up from a B movie. Don't go looking for a story line that will captivate and entrance you. This is not "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", but still, it entertains. Good soundtrack too.Read full review
