Worth watching alone for the powerful acting of the Oscar-winning Charlize Theron as Aileen Wuornos, the best known female serial killer in America. Anyone who has seen the footage of the real Wuornos from the Nick Broomfield documentary films will appreciate how Theron truly came to embody Wuornos both physically & disposition in the film & it's absorbing to watch. While the film itself goes down the route that Wuornos began acting out of the circumstances of her life (abused early & then her first killing in self-defence after she turned to prostitution & was assaulted) it also doesn't excuse the path she remained on, as she eventually began to kill not in self-defence but out of choice. It also only shades on the mental issues that may have plagued her as well but her romance with the character of Selby (not the real person's name but altered for the film) shows the audience the relationship that could possibly have been her one chance to correct things. It's an absorbing film, filled with actors at their best (Christina Ricci is a revelation as well & was criminally overlooked in that years Best Supporting Actress race, alongside smaller roles from the likes of Bruce Dern) in a powerful story that doesn't seek to acquit Wuornos of her guilt but simply show her story.Read full review
