I don't know about better than expected, but even as a keen Pratchett fan I can see that a very good young person's book makes demands that not everyone may be up to. The narrative is gripping,(and funny), but does not make concessions in the cosy "Famous Five" style that seem to be the current fashion. The heroine Tiffany is grounded in real life, even if her adventures take her far from that and the consequences of action are examined. Much of Pratchett's work contains references to other books, events and objects outside the story and if the reader can live with not getting all the jokes first time, second and third reads are rewarding. Yes it is fantasy, but with more real substance than many a serious book.

A great short book that can be enjoyed as part of the wider Discworld series or books, or enjoy on it's own. Lots of laughs as always and introduces a new character to the series, but watch out, she's viscous with an iron pan! Would highly recommend as an introduction to the series to those scared to commit to one of the larger titles from the Discworld.

I bought this book for my husband back in 2003, who is a fan of the Asprin Myth series. He thinks that this book is not quite as good as the first couple in the series, but a very good addition. He was also really happy that the myth universe was continuing. I’ve read a few of the books myself, and I think that this series seems to work best as a compilation, starting from the beginning and reading through. Overall though, another good book, and definitely worth adding to the collection.

Another great read by Terry Pratchett. Compelling story with just the right amount of humour. All the Tiffany books are just as good.
